2017-2018 Project Ghana: Second Session Native American Studies

The seventh grade students of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School gave a Native American presentation for the students in Ghana.

The seventh grade College and Career Ready students of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School gave a Native American presentation for the students in Ghana. During this presentation the students spoke about the Olmec. The Olmec was a Native American tribe that prospered around Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. They also informed their peers in Ghana that the Olmec knew how to farm and was able to produce enough of food for over thousands of people. In addition, the Olmec tribe was known to have sculpted monuments and have drainage systems.

The next tribe that the College and Career Ready students presented was the Maya. This time they told the students in Ghana that they picked a color that they thought best represented this tribe. Some students picked yellow representing the gods the Mayans worshipped. Other students picked gray representing the Mayans hieroglyphic writing.

The final tribe that the College and Career Ready students presented was the Aztec. The Aztec was a tribe known to have done horrifying acts of sacrifice. This time the College and Career Ready students shared fictional stories with the students in Ghana. They created a story which dealt with trying to escape the Aztecs. One story dealt with arriving on the beach and having the Aztec staring at you. What happens next? The story went into being captured and then finding a way to escape.

After the students presentations, Mr. Wronko showed the students in Ghana a documentary about Native Americans. This documentary went into many tribes such as the Cherokee, Seminole, Mound Builders, and Aleuts.

The students in Ghana asked many questions regarding the tribes of the Native Americans and the lead teacher in Ghana, Papa, had a photo session with the College Career and Ready and Ghana students.
