A video has gone viral of a white Mount Laurel man going on a racist rant towards his neighbors.

According to reports, the incident took place on the 3800 block of Gramercy Way on Friday July 1 around 7:50 p.m.

Police say Edward Cagney Mathews, 45, has been charged with harassment and biased intimidation.

The video shows Mathews on the doorstep of a Black man. He repeatedly using racial slurs toward the Black man and refuses to leave the property before telling the man to “come see me” and stating his home address.

“The Mount Laurel Police Department does not tolerate hate or bias intimidation in any form,” the department wrote in their release.

“This type of behavior is totally unacceptable. We can assure our residents that incidents like this are thoroughly investigated and that those who commit such offenses will be held accountable for their actions.”

Not The First Time For The Mount Laurel Man

Neighbors told CBS3’s Alexandria Hoff the recorded incident is not the first time Mathews has allegedly harassed others.

Neighbors say most confrontations involving Mathews have been with Black residents, but also include interracial couples, Indian residents and even the elderly.

“If you do your research, this guy has been harassing many people in that complex,” said Marcus Sibley, president of the Southern Burlington NAACP.

“If you have a repeat offender and this is a hate crime, we need to stop giving people lollipop repercussions and an example needs to be made out of this person.”

During the protest outside his residence, cops escorted Mathews out of his house in the Essex Place Condominiums development and into a police car.

People threw water and juice bottles at Mathews as he was walked to the vehicle.

It is unclear why Mathews was taken from his house, according to the NJ.com.

The department said they are also investigating “other incidents” involving Mathews and urge anyone with information to call (856) 234-8300 or the confidential tip line (856) 234-1414 Ext. 1599.
