A Funny Thing That Happened On The Way To The Forum makes English literature funny.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Two River Theater)

Not really into the semantics of Shakespeare and English-theory you have to decipher? You loved it when reading it in your English lit classes, but beyond that it’s pretty much a no go when it comes to entertainment purposes. Well, Two River Theater’s current production might change your mind with its strikingly funny running production.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to see this wonderful musical at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. The Two River Theater kicked off its season with August Wilson’s Seven Guitars, a heavy play on race relations. As we gear into the holiday season, The Two River Theater’s is turning things around a bit and running an-all male production entitled ‘A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum” by Jessica Stone starring Christopher Fitzgerald. It is a 1962 comic musical, inspired by Roman playwright Plautus, reaching back to the way the Romans did it, except casting every part and every toga with a male actor followed with extreme laughter.

You can kick boring out the window. The story follows Pseudolus, an ambitious (but somewhat lazy) slave, who tries to win his freedom by playing matchmaker for his innocent young master. Throughout this journey, he finds it won’t be an easy task. Will he prevail and gain his freedom?

A Funny Thing That Happened On The Way To Forum is currently running until December 13th. For more information, please visit http://trtc.org
