Three Monmouth County towns announced its police force will be wearing body cameras, as it comes during a time with national high emotions over police misconduct.

Officers in Howell Township started wearing the devices on Thursday, while officers in Wall and Middletown Township will begin using them next week.

Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni says the pilot program will run at least three months.

Police Body Cameras

Officers have been trained in the proper use and operation of the cameras, will turn them on for calls of service, motor vehicle stops, field interviews, investigative detentions and sobriety checkpoints, and would have the discretion to activate them for any other situations, Gramiccioni said.

The prosecutor says the departments were chosen because of their location, population and compatibility with their patrol car cameras.

Will the body cameras prove to be effective? Only time will tell.
