Authorities have announced four arrests in connection to the Mother’s Day shooting that left a teenager dead in Newark.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark police announced Friday that Jaqeuce Spinks, 19, Marquise Cephus, 18, and two juveniles, ages 16 and 17 were with the connection of the murder of 15-year-old Al-Shakeen Woodson during the annual “Blessing of the Bikes” event in the city’s South Ward.

Authorities say the shooting was between a rival gang and that Woodson was an innocent bystander caught in the cross fire. Authorities also say the shooting had nothing to do with the motorcycle event, but stemmed from a long-running feud that Cephus and the 17-year-old had with Spinks and the 16-year-old.

In addition to Woodson, Spinks was shot and two other individuals, who were not part of the dispute, also were struck, Murray said.

Spinks and the 16-year-old have been charged with murder and weapons offenses, and Cephus and the 17-year-old have been charged with weapons offenses.

Spinks and Cephus are being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility, and the juveniles are in custody at the Essex County Youth Detention Center. All four defendants are from Newark.

This the city’s 29th homicide of the year.
