At least 15 Shot and Killed By New Jersey Cops In The Last Two Years

At least 15 people have been shot and killed by New Jersey cops in the last two years.

At least 15 people have been shot and killed by New Jersey cops within the last two years reports NJ.com. This week, a N.J. State Trooper shot and killed a 35-year-old Middlesex County man as the man aimed a vehicle at the trooper’s cruiser and sped toward it, officials have said.

From 2009 to 2013, there were 15 trooper-involved shootings, according to State Police statistics. From 2004 through halfway of last year, there were 15 arrest-related deaths involving the State Police.

In nine cases, the subject died. All of those shootings were found to be justified.

Here are several recent cases:

Union
On Tuesday, troopers confronted 35-year-old Daniel Wolfe after he entered a stolen Jeep. Police fired as Wolfe’s vehicle accelerated toward them. Wolfe died shortly afterward at University Hospital in Newark.

Bridgeton
In December 2014, Jerame C. Reid, 36, was fatally shot after a handgun was “revealed” during the traffic stop, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office. In a video, Reid appears to have his hands in front of him as he stands to get out of the car and is shot and killed by the officers.

Ewing
Darnell Stafford, 31, of Ewing, was shot and killed on Nov. 13, 2014 after firing at police officers responding to a report of a man with a gun.


Phillipsburg

In Nov. 2014, officials said Thomas Read, 36, died of multiple gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation with three Phillipsburg Police officers in his apartment. Read, who has a history of mental health issues, was shot seven times. In February, the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office ruled that deadly force was justified.

Rutherford
In Sept. 2014, police shot and killed Kashad Ashford, 23, of Newark, the driver of a stolen SUV, after he reversed and then allegedly backed the SUV into a police vehicle.

Old Bridge
On Jan. 14, an Old Bridge police officer shot and killed 75-year-old Talbot Schroeder inside his home after the man attacked a family member and threatened a police officer with a knife, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Atlantic City
In Sept. 2014, three plain-clothes detectives responding to reports of gunfire in Atlantic City fatally shot Shawn Brown, 20, who was armed with a handgun, according to police.

Jersey City
Lawrence Campbell, 27, was shot and killed July 13, 2014 after shooting to death Jersey City police Officer Melvin Santiago in his patrol car.

Elizabeth
John DelValle, 44, of Elizabeth was shot and killed on June 29, 2014 during a domestic dispute with his wife. Police said DelValle refused several commands to drop a knife.

Hamilton
On April 1, Hamilton Police shot Sean Clyde, 36, after he refused to drop a knife he had used to stab his 54-year-old father, authorities said. Clyde later died of his injuries.

Jersey City
In June 2014, 20-year-old Lavon King was shot and killed by police after he struggled with the officer in the backyard of an Ege Avenue home, police said.

East Orange
Karlando Roberts, 32, of East Orange was shot in the chest and killed on Jan. 1, 2013 as he stabbed his father-in-law. Police said the suspect refused to drop the knife.

Trenton
Eric McNeil, 23, was shot and killed Aug. 15, 2013 after shooting Trenton police officers James Letts and Detective Edgar Rios as the officers investigated a domestic assault.

South Brunswick
Andrew B. Murnieks, 28, was killed Nov. 20, 2013 after a four-hour standoff at his home in South Brunswick. Police said Murnieks was emotionally disturbed and struggled with officers before he was shot.


Perth Amboy

Dixon Rodriguez, 32, was shot and killed Dec. 4, 2013 in front of his apartment house in Perth Amboy. City police officers Gina Fontan and Rafael Puntiel said Rodriguez, who had a history of mental illness, attacked Fontan and brandished a knife.
