Police are searching for a prisoner who escaped from a hospital in Newark, New Jersey Monday morning.

As reported by 7 Online:

Authorities say 46-year-old Elijan Shabazz, who was under police guard by two officers, was able to get out of University Hospital in Newark. He was admitted for inpatient treatment after complaining of chest pains last Friday.

But when doctors and officers went into his room around 11 a.m. Monday, Shabazz was gone.

The hospital then went into lockdown mode around noon, with no one permitted to enter or leave with the exception of patients entering for treatment.

A search is being conducted by the Newark police and Rutgers police departments, as well as hospital personnel.

Shabazzm was in prison for robbery, burglary and resisting arrest. Once recaptured, he will face additional charges.

The lockdown has since been lifted, but the suspect has not been found.
