These days you can’t ride a scooter and be a kid anymore without becoming an innocent victim of violence.

Three friends had taken a walk Saturday to their Paterson, N.J., neighborhood store around 8:40 p.m. When they got to the store and realized it was closed, they started their walk home, sharing rides on a scooter. A gunman who was reportedly aiming for someone else opened fire. Genesis Rincon, a 12-year-old student was struck in the head.

Genesis is now considered ‘brain dead’ according to police. As of last night, her family was preparing to donate her organs.

According to police Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez, Genesis, another girl around her age and a boy a few years younger had left a family event to walk to the neighborhood store when the shots rang out.

Police have not released much details only stating “there was a target and obviously it wasn’t the 12-year-old girl,” Rodriguez said. “She was an innocent child.”

The department is offering a $2,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest in the shooting. Anyone with information can call (973) 321-1120, (973) 321-1342 or (973) 523-TIPS and remain anonymous.
