Asbury Park Middle School’s 5th Consecutive Year at the Museum in Trenton

In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and now 2014, Asbury Park Middle School
students had their projects put on display for Super Science Saturday at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. This year Asbury Park Middle School student Jada Armstead came to Super Science Saturday in which she presented numerous projects to many visitors.

The projects she presented and that were on display were:

The Iron Clad Project: This project allowed students to decide what side they should be on during the time of the Civil War, North or South. Once a side was chosen, the students had to create an ironclad similar to the Monitor and Merrimack and have their creation battle another ironclad.

Battle of Pydna: This project showed how the Macedonian Phalanx was
defeated by the Romans.

Battle of Thermopylae: This project showed how a small band of
Spartans fought to the bitter end against a huge Persian army.

Elements: This project showed how elements are a substance that has
atoms. The atoms have the same number of protons.

Soil Formation: This project showed soil composition and formation.

Battle of Cannae: This project showed how Hannibal, Carthaginian leader, used a military strategy that allowed his small band of troops to surround and annihilate a threatening Roman army.

Ancient Egypt: This project allowed students to create dioramas based on King Tut, the Pyramids of Giza, Mummies, and any other concept that represented Ancient Egypt.

Cretaceous War Zone: This project allowed students to take prehistoric creatures from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous period and put them in combat situations to see what creature would survive. The Cretaceous War Zone promoted students conducting research about the physical aspects of the prehistoric creatures, geography, and forensics.

Fossils: This project allowed students to create their own fossils based on different kinds of prehistoric animals. The students had not only created the fossils but also researched the biological nature of these animals.

Computer Graphics: This project allowed students to use computer tools to design their own dinosaur fossil.

Apatosaurus project: Students had to write a paper on how the name Brontosaurus was a mistake and the true name to this gigantic dinosaur was Apatosaurus. Journey to the Center of the Earth: Students created a diorama based on the classic novel by Jules Verne.

Prehistoric Times Magazine Project: Prehistoric Times Magazines were put on display that had Asbury Park students work published inside of them. Asbury Park Middle School students were published in issues 93, 96, 97, 98, 99a, 99b, 100a, 100b, 102, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, and 109.

Jada Armstead was accompanied by her two teachers, Mr. Wronko, 7th
grade social studies teacher, and Mr. Mason, 7th grade science teacher. Both Mr. Wronko and Mr. Mason supervised Jada’s performance of her outstanding presentations.

In addition, Mr. Mason conducted a brief presentation on how weather played apart during the major wars in U.S. history, World War One, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. Mr. Mason provided the following information: As with everyday life, participants in war need to study the weather. Weather has played a factor in decisions by the military in every war. Weather has had an impact on key military battles and campaigns throughout history. Military leaders who took weather events and patterns into account before a battle typically fared better than those who ignored them.

Thanks goes out to:
